Inland Spousal/Common-Law Partner Sponsorship: Open Work Permit Pilot Program
An open work permit is granted to the spouses/common-law partners of Canadians or PRs under this pilot program, while their inland sponsorship application is being processed. This pilot program is extended until July 31st, 2020, from December 2014.
The family class immigration stream has a sub-category for spousal immigration under which a Canadian or a permanent citizen can bring his/her common-law partner or spouse and sponsor for the Canadian permanent residence. Inland sponsorship is a class of spousal sponsorship under which the spouse is already residing in Canada but with temporary status.
IRCC targets to authorize and verify applications within 12 months of their submission. The open work permit is issued to the spouse to help them in economic and emotional hardships. The open permit is neither an employer nor a job-specific. It just ensures confirmation of employment. They are usually of two years or are extended to the expiry date of the applicant’s passport, whichever is first.
