Working While Studying in Canada

International Students can work in Canada without getting a work permit during the course tenure The immigration policy allows the students to work and gain experience while they are studying.

Work off-campus

With a valid study permit, the students can work for an outside campus employer to gain experience and support their studies expenses. They can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic sessions and full time during the brakes such as spring break and winter holidays.

Eligibility requirements

You should have a valid study permit to work while studying
Should be enrolled in full time at a DLI
You must showcase satisfactory academic standing as stated by the institution
have a Social Insurance Number
You must be studying in a valid course or training program for at least six months and gives a degree, certificate, or diploma.

International students may not be eligible for working in Canada in case there is any change in status, and they do not meet the requirements.

Following Students may not work off-campus

Students who have English or French as the second language
students taking the general interest course
the exchange program students at a DLI

The IRCC looks at the credits score, a number of hours, and full-time status to make sure that the student can work off-campus.

A student who is not any more studying as a full-time student could work off-campus if they were initially registered as a Full-Time student. They are taking a part-time course as they are in the last semester, which does not require full-time study.

Work on-campus

International students can work within the campus when they meet the following criteria

They have a valid Study Permit
Have a Social Insurance Number
They are registered in a full-time post-secondary course at public or private school
a private college-level school in Quebec that works under the same rules which public schools, and is at least 50% funded by Government or
a Canadian private school that can award degrees under provincial legalities

Intern or co-op student

Several International students must complete a mandatory work placement or internship with their programs. Such students must apply for the co-op or intern permit along with the study permit.

Post-Graduation Work Permits

The students can get Post Graduation work permits when their course completes. The spouses and legal partners of the students who are doing full-time courses can also get an open work permit.
