Bringing a Spouse, Common-Law Partner, or Family Members to Canada

Family Members Definition

The family members are spouses, dependent children, and common-law partners.

Visitor Visas

The other countries’ citizens require a TRV when they want to enter Canada as a visitor. The visa should be applied beforehand and cannot be attained at the port of entry.

Citizens of some countries do not need a TRV. However, on November 10, 2016, most visa-exempt persons need an electronic Travel Authorization (beta). The main relaxation is for the U.S. citizens, who do not need a TRV nor an eTA.

Full-time international students can bring their spouses to the country and help them in getting the Open Work Permit. This permit allows the partners to work in the country for the entire duration of the study program. The student should be enrolled in a full-time course and have a valid study permit.
The open work permit helps the bearer to work in Canada at any organization without a job offer.

Spousal Work Permit Duration and Application

The Spouse or partner may also come to Canada as a visitor and then get the work permit after landing in the country. Several countries are exempted from the TRV, and the work permit may be applied at the time of the port of entry.
